Fourth Grade Team's Grading Philosophy: Student evaluation is a very important aspect of the academic program. It is our desire that our evaluation system will further the pupil’s growth toward self-direction and self-responsibility. All students will be given opportunities to learn. Hopefully, through a feeling of success, students will desire to learn more.
Individual differences will be taken into account when trying to meet the needs of our students. Our goal is to provide opportunities for success.
A variety of instruments and devices will be utilized in gathering data, such as: oral and written reports, tests and quizzes, projects, daily assignments, classroom participation and performance.
The following procedures will be used to evaluate student performance in our classroom’s this year.
I. GRADING PROCEDURES
The following grading scale will be used to determine the nine week’s grade:
99-100 A+ 76-81 C 94-98 A 74-75 C- 92-93 A- 72-73 D+ 90-91 B+ 68-71 D 86-89 B 66-67 D- 84-85 B- 0-65 F 82-83 C+
Students scoring below 65 on major tests and quizzes will have the opportunity to improve their grade to a maximum of 65 by completing some remediation activities as determined by the teacher. In addition to helping a child improve his grade, the remediation activities provide the student an additional opportunity to master skills or content that was not learned the first time. Students who do not take advantage of this remediation will receive the original grade.
Semester grades will be an average of the two nine weeks’ grades.
It should be noted that graded papers that the student brings home are not necessarily the only grades that are a part of the student’s final report card grade. (Example: oral reports, class participation, differentiated assignments for individual students).
Students who do not attempt to accomplish the goals of the assignment or who are caught cheating on an assignment shall be assigned a “0” which cannot be raised.
II. LATE WORK
The student is responsible for completing all assigned work. Points will be deducted from a student’s grade if an assignment is late.
III. TESTS, QUIZZES, DAILY WORK, SPECIAL PROJECTS
Daily work counts as one grade. Homework will not always be counted as a grade. If it is counted, it will count as one grade the same as daily work.
Tests will be given at the end of the chapters.
Test grades in math, language, reading, science, and social studies will be weighted more heavily than daily assignments.
Special projects may be assigned during the year. The student will be aware of this grading procedure at the time the assignment is given.
IV. MAKE-UP WORK
It is the responsibility of the student to find out what was missed and to complete the assignments in a reasonable amount of time. If not completed, a zero will be recorded.
V. OTHER
An evaluation in circumstances not included in the above procedures will be made on the basis of the teacher’s professional opinion.
